After Senegal, Burkina’s turn to host PRISE national stakeholder engagement workshop
January 2015 : IED Afrique mobilizes in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) researchers, civil society organizations, the private sector, government and policy makers and regional organizations around the issue of climate change in Burkina Faso, from 13 to 15 January 2015
In Burkina Faso, Sahel countries, the effects of climate change on people and the economy growth is very important. Because of their high vulnerability to extreme climate events, among which floods and droughts that may occur in the same area several times a year, households and many key sectors of the economy are heavily affected. However, climate change also contain opportunities that could have positive impact on agricultural production, food security, and therefore on the inhabitants of the rural sector, especially the most vulnerable, such as women.
In this context, the objective of the PRESA project that puts the focus on research, policy dialogue with stakeholders and capacity building is to foster the emergence and development of equitable and resilient economies in semi- arid land, through research and sustained commitment of business leaders, local and national government policy makers, civil society and regional economic communities.
It is in this context that a series of reviews were conducted in Senegal and Burkina Faso in order to foster a better understanding of current challenges and climate issues and how they affect key sectors of the economy and policies and programs implemented at national and regional level in response to these challenges. These reviews are of two types :
Country Assessment Reviews : that allow an analysis of the context of development of each country, identifying current and future climate risks and their impact on adaptation.
Thematic reviews : that aim to produce analytical documents clearly showing the links between climate risks and : (i) Governance and adaptation finance in semi-arid areas ; (ii) natural capital in semi-arid areas ; (iii) human capital in semi-arid areas ; (iv) markets and value chains in semi-arid areas.
PRISE national stakeholder engagement workshop, which will take place from 13 to 15 January 2015, therefore constitute an opportunity to sharing with stakeholder the first results of different reviews and to identify new research questions and priority areas to be covered during the implementation phase of the project.
The last day of the workshop will summarize the results of the first two days of exchange and dedicate the establishment of PRISE national stakeholder platform in Burkina. Many publications produced by IED Afrique as part of its program AGRIDAPE on central issues related to climate change - Water, Sustainable Livestock, market access, Land and Landscape, Drought in the Sahel, etc. - Will be distributed to participants.
